The department conducts regular staff training and develops programs, plans and SOPs based on orders of the Ministry of Health and international recommendations.

Department Overview

Infection prevention and a safe environment in a healthcare facility

The Infection Control Department is a structural unit of the National Cancer Institute responsible for the prevention of healthcare-associated diseases. It helps to maintain a safe environment in the hospital for patients, their relatives and visitors, as well as for medical staff. Its employees advise the management on measures such as closing wards in the event of infection outbreaks, evaluating the effectiveness of disinfectants, etc.

The activities of the department in Ukraine are regulated by the Order of the Ministry of Health No. 1614 dated 03.08.2021.

Specialization

Main tasks and functions

The main goal of the department is to reduce the spread of healthcare-associated diseases through the following areas of work:

Routine epidemiological surveillance: monitoring infections and keeping records of them in the institution, comparing them with previous indicators and global indicators of cancer hospitals.
Hand hygiene: implementation of hand hygiene standards among staff, training, monitoring.
Administration of antimicrobials: control over the rational use of antimicrobials to curb resistance, training, monitoring of antimicrobial consumption.
Staff training: regular trainings on infection control compliance.
Development of programs, plans, SOPs: creation of individual documents on infection control for the facility based on orders of the Ministry of Health, recommendations of the WHO, CDC, etc.
