Starting in 2025, Ukraine introduced a new form of postgraduate education for physicians — medical residency. It is intended for specialist physicians who wish to gain deep, highly specialized knowledge and skills in a specific field of medicine.
The National Cancer Institute is proud to cooperate with higher education institutions for the practical training of resident physicians in oncology specialties.
In 2025, we welcomed our first residents, who complete a key part of their training within our walls under the guidance of the Institute's top specialists.
It is important to understand: admission and the overall organization of the educational process are handled directly by the higher education institution (university) licensed to provide training in the relevant specialty.
The Cancer Institute serves as the leading clinical base — meaning it is here that resident physicians gain practical experience working with patients, improve their diagnostic and treatment skills under mentor supervision, and carry out their individual training plan in the real-world setting of an oncology clinic.

In the 2025–2026 academic year, we have already begun training resident physicians in the specialty "Clinical Oncology" under the state order and on a contract basis (funded by individuals/legal entities).
Since admission is carried out through the university, the exact requirements and competition conditions should be verified on the websites of the relevant higher education institutions. According to the Regulation on Medical Residency, the following Ukrainian citizens are eligible to apply:
Entrance examinations usually include a professional test and a clinical exam, conducted by the higher education institution.
Training begins on September 1 and lasts 3 years. Each resident works according to an individual plan developed together with the university supervisor and our clinical mentor. The plan includes rotations through the Institute's specialized departments. Final certification is conducted with the participation of representatives from both the university and our clinical base. Successful completion grants the right to receive a specialist physician certificate in the chosen oncology specialty.
