The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is a partner in a number of international projects under the EU4Health programme. They bring together leading cancer centres, research institutions and health authorities from across Europe.
Taking part in these initiatives allows the NCI to contribute to shaping modern European approaches to the prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up care of patients with cancer. The Institute represents Ukrainian experience and needs at the European level and adapts international practices to the conditions of Ukraine's healthcare system.
Implementation of Cancer Screening Programmes
A large-scale European initiative that develops and improves cancer screening programmes. The project covers breast, cervical and colorectal cancer screening, as well as new approaches to the early detection of lung, prostate and gastric cancer.
The NCI joins the project as a Ukrainian expert and clinical partner: it analyses existing approaches and barriers, works on screening quality and on personalised and risk-based models, and provides the Ukrainian context for research and recommendations.
The experience of EU countries helps Ukraine develop organised screening programmes, improve their quality and gradually bring approaches to the early detection of cancer closer to European standards.
The European Comprehensive Cancer Centre Network
The project builds a European network of comprehensive cancer centres and strengthens cooperation between leading institutions in diagnostics, treatment, research, education and innovation.
The NCI takes part in the project as the competent authority from Ukraine. The Institute works on approaches to organising comprehensive cancer care, ensuring its quality, developing professional expertise and fostering cooperation between cancer centres.
Participation in EUnetCCC is an important step towards deeper integration of Ukraine's cancer care service into the European professional community. The NCI exchanges experience with leading European centres, introduces modern organisational and clinical approaches, and represents Ukraine's needs in shaping a pan-European model of comprehensive cancer care.
Joint Action on Networks of Expertise on Cancer
The project creates European networks of expertise in specific areas of oncology. Their task is to bring together specialised knowledge from different countries and to develop shared clinical and organisational approaches, educational materials, quality criteria and recommendations for complex areas of cancer care.
NCI specialists work in networks dedicated to tumours with a complex or poor prognosis, palliative care, support for patients after treatment, personalised prevention and the use of high-technology medical resources. The Institute shares Ukrainian clinical experience, reports on national needs and barriers, and contributes to developing recommendations, educational approaches and models of care organisation.
Ukraine gains access to concentrated European expertise precisely in the areas where treatment is most difficult and the need for highly specialised knowledge is greatest.
Strategies for Health Interventions to Eliminate Infection-related Cancers
The project is dedicated to the prevention of cancers associated with infections. The main focus is on vaccination against the human papillomavirus (HPV) and hepatitis B, access to prevention programmes, and overcoming stigma, discrimination and other barriers that hinder prevention and early detection.
In the project, the NCI represents the Ukrainian clinical and oncology context, assesses national practices and barriers, and contributes to the preparation of recommendations and to engagement with Ukrainian partners and stakeholders.
SHIELD helps strengthen primary cancer prevention and better combine vaccination, preventive medicine and cancer care.
Joint Action on Personalised Cancer Medicine
The project develops personalised medicine in oncology — an approach in which prevention, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up take into account the patient's individual characteristics and the biological features of the tumour. Areas of work include genetic predisposition and risk assessment, molecular diagnostics, molecular tumour boards, liquid biopsy, personalised treatment models and digital patient monitoring.
The NCI takes part in the pan-European exchange of experience, represents the Ukrainian context and involves the Ukrainian professional community in the discussion on developing personalised oncology.
Participation in PCM contributes to the gradual introduction of modern models of personalised care and to taking Ukraine's needs into account in future European recommendations and roadmaps.
Improving Quality and Timeliness of Cancer Registry Data
The project aims to improve the quality, completeness and timeliness of cancer registry data in Europe and to make better use of it in the European Cancer Information System (ECIS). Participants harmonise cancer registration approaches, digitalise processes and assess data quality, so that information on cancer is as useful as possible for policymaking, research and evaluating the effectiveness of healthcare systems.
In CancerWatch, the NCI represents the Ukrainian context: the needs, barriers and opportunities for developing a national cancer registration system.
Participation in the project brings the collection and analysis of cancer data in Ukraine closer to European practices and makes this data more comparable internationally.
Enhancing the Digital Capabilities of Cancer Centres in Europe to Improve Prevention and Care
The project develops the digital capabilities of cancer centres in Europe and uses digital technologies to make cancer care more accessible and of higher quality. Key areas include telemedicine, remote patient monitoring, digital skills of healthcare professionals and digital tools for following up patients at different stages of treatment.
The NCI's participation brings Ukraine into the European professional exchange on the digital transformation of oncology and opens opportunities to study practices that can be adapted to Ukraine's healthcare system.
Digital solutions are especially important for our country: they help ensure access to specialised care regardless of where the patient is, and maintain continuity of follow-up.
International cooperation is not only an exchange of experience but also a real path to better cancer care for every patient in Ukraine. We learn from our European colleagues and, at the same time, contribute to joint solutions for the whole of Europe.
