Practical Training for Students

Practical training is a key stage of education, when students apply their knowledge in practice, develop professional skills, and become familiar with the real working conditions of a medical institution.

The National Cancer Institute is a clinical base for educational, clinical, and pre-graduation practicum for students from various educational institutions in Ukraine. We cooperate with universities, colleges, and academies to provide a quality learning environment for future professionals.

Students in the following specialties can complete their practicum with us:

Medicine
Nursing
Psychology
Physical therapy, occupational therapy
Therapy and rehabilitation
Biology, biochemistry
Biotechnology, bioengineering
Social work

and other medical and related fields.

What practicum at NCI includes

For medical students

patient care;
performing injections, dressings, measuring vital signs;
completing medical documentation under a supervisor's guidance;
becoming familiar with the work of departments, treatment rooms, and operating rooms.

For students in laboratory and biological specialties

working with biomaterials, their receipt and recording (blood, urine, swabs, etc.);
preparing samples for testing;
performing stages of general clinical, biochemical, hematological, and serological tests;
working with laboratory equipment (automatic analyzers, microscopes, centrifuges);
maintaining medical documentation, becoming familiar with electronic medical systems, and recording test results.

For rehabilitation students

conducting initial and repeat assessments of patients' functional status;
developing and implementing individual physical or occupational therapy programs;
working with modern rehabilitation equipment;
observing and correcting exercise technique;
team collaboration with physicians, psychologists, and nurses, and communication with patients and their relatives.

For psychology students

observing the work of medical staff and the psychologist in the oncology department;
participating in providing individual and group support to patients, and psychological counseling;
understanding patients' reactions to diagnosis and treatment;
helping families cope with psychological difficulties;
providing specialized information and emotional support to the patient's family;
participating in creating informational materials for patients and their loved ones;
adhering to the principles of professional ethics, confidentiality, and the boundaries of competence.

What students gain after completing their practicum:

To complete the practicum on a free-of-charge basis, the following must be submitted two weeks before it begins:

a letter of request from the educational institution;
a concluded agreement between the educational institution and NCI;
a practicum work program.
