Specialized Treatment for Children with Solid Malignant Tumors

The National Cancer Institute's Department of Pediatric Oncology is Ukraine's leading center for treating children with solid malignant tumors, established in 1969. It comprises a consultation room, a rehabilitation and pre-admission examination unit, and a 45-bed inpatient department with an intensive chemotherapy unit (beds for chemotherapy and surgical treatment).

The department treats children from across Ukraine with newly diagnosed solid malignant tumors — up to 300 children a year from all regions of Ukraine. It treats children aged 0 to 18 with all types of solid malignant tumors, except thyroid tumors and malignant diseases of the hematopoietic system.

Each year we perform approximately 250 complex surgical procedures, including liver resections, hemihepatectomies, pancreaticoduodenectomies, kidney resections, bone resections with endoprosthetics, reconstruction with autologous or allogeneic grafts, and procedures using endoscopic technique. Limb-sparing surgeries (endoprosthetics, autoplasty including microsurgical technique) account for about 80% of cases. The department's specialists collaborate with colleagues in related fields and perform joint procedures with neurosurgeons, thoracic surgeons, and maxillofacial surgeons. We also work closely with cardiac surgeons and perform procedures using cardiopulmonary bypass.

All types of solid malignant tumors in children aged 0 to 18.
Primarily comprehensive treatment (surgical + chemotherapy) of solid tumors, including complex operations: liver resections, hemihepatectomies, kidney resections, bone resections with endoprosthetics; high-dose chemotherapy with bone marrow transplantation; endoscopic surgery; reconstructive procedures, autologous or allogeneic grafts.
