EUCanScreen: First-Year Results and What They Mean for Ukraine

The European EUCanScreen initiative, in which Ukraine also takes part, has summed up the results of its first year of work. The project is aimed at developing and modernizing cancer screening programs across Europe and is being implemented under the EU4Health program and Europe's Beating Cancer Plan.

Screening means the early detection of cancer in people without symptoms. It is precisely this that makes it possible to find the disease at early stages, when treatment is most effective and less burdensome for the patient.

First-Year Results

Project participants focused on:

• analyzing how cancer screening is organized in different countries;
• developing unified approaches to the quality and effectiveness of screening programs;
• creating shared methodologies, indicators, and evaluation tools;
• training medical specialists and developing professional competencies;
• overcoming barriers to public access to screening.

Particular attention is being paid to approaches to screening that account for individual risk factors, as well as to reducing inequality in access to examinations.

Plans for the Second Year

• increasing population coverage by screening programs;
• improving quality control;
• developing monitoring and outcome evaluation systems;
• supporting countries in implementing modern screening standards.

Why This Matters for Ukraine

Under wartime conditions, the burden on the healthcare system has grown significantly, and patients' access to preventive examinations has become more difficult. At the same time, it is precisely early detection of oncological diseases that reduces mortality and improves treatment effectiveness.

European initiatives are shaping modern screening standards, which Ukraine's healthcare system aims to integrate with. For the National Cancer Institute, this means:

• alignment with European recommendations on organizing screening;
• the use of best international practices in cancer diagnosis and prevention;
• development of medical professionals' competencies;
• participation in international exchange of experience and expertise;
• bringing Ukrainian cancer care closer to EU standards.

Ukraine's integration into European oncology initiatives is an important step toward strengthening the early diagnosis system, improving the quality of medical care, and achieving better treatment outcomes for patients.
